hi, my name is kaspar ravel.

I am an artist, teacher and researcher in tactical new media.

I design and employ safe(r) technologies to tackle contemporary societal issues.

statement

I believe we all are, in some way, hackers. Whether when tapping the side of a malfunctioning screen, blowing dust from a phone charger, or covering our webcams with tape : we negotiate our relationship with machines everyday. Unintended at first, these gestures have progressively become an inherent part of contemporary life and have coexisted alongside technology since its beginnings.

Individually, these practices may seem simple, but together they form a linguo shared by us humans, constituent of a complex array of tactics and strategies that seeks to improve our connected lives. Likewise they pave the way for the future of digital literacy; our ability to understand and reshape the systems that alienate us.

We often hear about the hegemonic status of big data empires, but too rarely do we speak of the history of self-organised counter powers in place, of the NGOs who fight for our privacy, of the local repair stores who ask the right to fix proprietary technology, and many other initiatives which all started like you and me by naively defying technology in its most intimate setting.

As an artist and an educator, I think it’s important to encourage people to have a critical approach, but more so giving them the confidence to [mis]use technology daily, experiment for themselves, and learn by trial and error. Through this process, maybe we can begin to re-imagine together how software might be coded differently, this time with embedded socialist and ecological values.

biography

Kaspar Ravel is an artist, teacher and researcher in tactical media, who designs and employs safe(r) technologies to tackle contemporary societal issues. Their practice takes the form of 'poelitical' experiments, merging poetic expression and political critique within art installations, investigative practices and explicit action.

They work with schools, embassies, government organisations, hacklabs, makerspaces and NGOs, conducting in-situ artistic research, conferences and demystification workshops, in which they reveal technological biases, promote hacker culture, low-tech approaches and alternative digital literacy through FLOSS philosophy.

As a self-taught coder, they also volunteer to write software, tech reports and help with data analysis for open-source intelligence groups and activists, who are active in the fields of environmental justice, social equity, post-colonial critique, and digital privacy.

Aside from all that, Kaspar spends their time taking care of plants, thrifting with friends, and occasionally hosting radio shows on independent stations like Kiosk, Lyl, and Egregore.
